Technical Education Scenario – An Observation

#YCobservatory

My seniors have guided me to be very observing of what goes on around you. This particular observation i felt obligated to share. It might not depict the overall Technical Education Scenario but yea this is the case with Majority of Technical Education institutes in India excluding the ones which actually care for the students.

It was this fine Thursday morning, i visited an Engineering College in a city of Rajasthan. Of Course i am not mentioning any names here. I was waiting for the arrival of the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering as i was supposed to meet him. Meanwhile two Asst. Professors and One Professor (a Ph.D.) were looking at a video of “Production Line of AUDI Factory” by National Geographic. The interesting thing began when they began the conversation, with the Professor making a remark!, ” What Marvelous setup of Production, Its amazing, I wonder how they achieve such accuracy and precise finishing !” One of the Asst. Professors concurred with the remark of the professor and added in the local language “They are using such high technology, we don’t even know about it.”

The subject taught by the professor to Mechanical Engineering student was Production Engineering and the Asst. Professors took the subjects of Automobile Engineering and Mechatronics.

What are these people going to teach the students when they don’t have the latest knowledge about their own subjects and don’t even feel ashamed of making such remarks, that too in front of a couple of students.

How can the students even dream about applying to one of such World Class Companies, when the application procedure support is already not at all available, but the teachers themselves don’t have the updated knowledge of technology.

#RealityCheck

We Stress on completing the Syllabus which is almost a generation old. Agreed, that the basics don’t change but putting stress on developing new concepts rather than making students learn long formulas. Emphasis has to be made on the clarity of concepts and practical applications of the topic rather than just theoretical mug ups. Evaluation System at all universities across India (Please Correct me if I am wrong) don’t have an air tight line for passing the students who only have clear concepts and practical application oriented knowledge. That is one of the major reasons, why unemployment in the field of Engineering is there.

Qualified teachers are the need of the Hour for India, If we are unable to update our Evaluation Schemes and have Qualified teachers who are willing to learn as well as teach passionately, than we are going no where. Its better to have no engineers than to have un-qualified engineers who are seeking employment.
