Time and again, i tell my students, that Social Media is a very effective way to get information. But, only if one interprets the information in the right manner. Marketing in Social Media has become very popular in the education sector, due to its low cost and effective targeting attributes. Students who have finished schooling and are now looking to pursue higher education in college / university need to be careful, while interpreting what they see on the social media handles of the college / university they are considering to join.
Once you have made a tentative list of colleges / universities, make it a point to visit their social media handles and go through the posts that have been made there. Be patient and browse through as much content as possible, atleast browse through the past 12 to 24 months. This would give you a better idea of how the students are involved in various activities, and also get a feel of how your college life would be if you choose that particular campus for your higher studies.
Look for placement data, student activities, festivals / events, academic highlights, faculty activities, industry interaction, expert interactions, achievements etc. It is very important that you choose a campus which multi-disciplinary, vibrant and caters to your overall development.
Good factors that you should look for is, consistent posting, less variation in the number of interactions is positive (if you find huge difference the likes / comments of some posts, that would indicate advertisement), sober & creative content etc.
Once you do this, i am sure, you would be able to better understand the college / university you are aiming to reach. Be cautious, while making the observations. There can be multiple pages of the same organization, you need to reach to the official page in order to get the exact information.
